The Late MSG James Sarratt: Sharing His Story

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1–2)

Master Sergeant James Sarratt (U.S. Army Retired) was born in Cherokee County, South Carolina to his birth parents: the late Booker T. Sarratt and the late Estella Mae Crosby. He was reared in the home of his beloved maternal grandmother, the late Carrie Mae Gordon Crosby Corry.

James was the devoted husband of Margaret Hunter Sarratt; the eldest sibling of Bennie Mae Fowler Hemphill (deceased), Grover Fowler, Sr., Teresa Fowler Dawkins (deceased), and Kerry Fowler, Sr.; and the birth father to Thomacina Tate Brown (deceased) and Bonita Tate Dawkins.

He was educated in the Cherokee County Public Schools, and graduated from Granard High School in the Class of 1953. In June 1953, James enlisted in the United States Army. While he was Specialist Second Class, James was selected as an honor graduate in the Ordnance Ammunition Supply Field Course at the U.S. Army Engineering Ordnance School in Europe. As a result of his excellent performance, James advanced to Ammunition Stock Control and Ammunition Advisor, and spent 20 years in that field.

He was also assigned as First Sergeant, Headquarters Company in Korea. Upon completion of that assignment, James received a Letter of Commendation and a plaque of appreciation for serving as First Sergeant in South Korea. Additionally, he was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal while serving in Alaska.

He served in the military during the Korea and Vietnam era displaying Honor, Courage, Integrity, Discipline, Dedication, Sacrifice, and Commitment. Having served faithfully and honorably, James retired from the United States Army as a Master Sergeant.

James was a Believer in the redemptive work of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and accepted Him as his Lord and Savior. He faithfully attended and supported the Island Creek Baptist Church.

James had a heart of compassion and he made it his mission to support organizations that provided free medical services for children, disabled veterans, and the homeless.
